For the 2021 edition, In-ruins proposed three thematic directions to explore what it means to be “in ruins,” and the ideas of proximity, futurity, and distance that this condition evokes:
-
The archive as both practice and metaphor, keeping archaeology within a dynamic field where individual and collective narratives emerge from fragments.
-
Archaeological research as political practice, capable of reshaping references to history, space, and time by expanding or disrupting conventional chronologies.
-
Personal narratives as tools to rewrite contemporary Mediterranean mythologies and develop new forms of identity.
The 10-day residency took place in July and August 2021, with flexible dates to suit participants. Studio and living spaces were provided near key archaeological sites, with local transport included. Sites of reference included the Castle of Squillace and the International Sculpture Park of Catanzaro. The format remained adaptable to ongoing Covid regulations.
